J-Term Diaries: Egypt
ARTH 211: Egyptian Near EastEgypt is one of the world’s oldest civilizations. The Nile Valley, or Upper Egypt, and the Nile Delta, or Lower Egypt, were first united at about 3000 BC. For the next 2000 years, no civilization surpassed Egypt in importance or prosperity. This January, Randolph-Macon students will tour the land of the Pharaohs, from the pyramids at Giza, to the painted tombs of the kings and nobles at Thebes, to the monumental temples built along the Nile River from Karnak to Abu Simbel. Students will visit the Greek city at Alexandria on the Mediterranean shore, Coptic Christian monasteries and churches, the mosques and universities of medieval Islamic Egypt, and the modern Souk, or marketplace.
