Prejudice, Privilege and Social Transformations in South Africa & Gender, Law and Society in South Africa
Students traveling to Johannesburg, South Africa, will explore a variety of social transformations in this remarkable country, as it moves from struggle and oppression toward democracy. One course emphasizes the juxtaposition of privilege and poverty/discrimination from a psychological perspective, while the second course examines changing gender identities in the legal, community and family context. A group of South African student “peer educators” will accompany the students as they attend lectures given by researchers and activists, conduct research, visit museums, townships, and various sights of the anti-apartheid struggle, and also enjoy the theatre and even a safari.
